Precies een jaar geleden werd de Belgische hoofdstad Brussel getroffen door een reeks aanslagen. Op de internationale luchthaven Zaventem en het Brusselse metrostation Maalbeek bliezen terroristen van Islamitische Staat zich op. Bij de aanslag vielen 32 doden en 340 gewonden.

De aanslagen waren waarschijnlijk een reactie op de arrestatie van Salah Abdeslam, slechts enkele dagen voor de aanslag. Abdeslam was een van de sleutelfiguren van de aanslagen in Parijs in 2015 en lid van een terroristencel in België. De Belgische cel bestond uit westerse moslims, van wie sommigen in Syrië of Irak hadden gestreden.

Het was de bloedigste aanslag in de geschiedenis van België. Na de terreurdaad kondigde de Belgische overheid drie dagen van nationale rouw aan. Andere landen toonden hun solidariteit door de Belgische vlag op prominente gebouwen te projecteren.

Woensdag wordt de aanslag op de luchthaven Zaventem herdacht in  aanwezigheid van de Belgische koning Filip, premier Charles Michel en andere ministers. Later volgt een plechtigheid bij metrostation Maalbeek.
